Joshua Levi Galleries Wooloongabba, Brisbane, QLD July 31st - 19th August.
Zylstra's solo exhibition with Artist WHO, hung in separate large spaces of Joshua Levi's Gallery but on moving through the rabbit warren maze to reach each impressive space, each artist work was impactful and complimented one another in title of exhibition only, with the raw masculinity of WHO'S pieces to the more feminine, conceptually emotional pieces of Zylstra's, was most definitely noticed.
Zylstra's Series of Superhero's and landscapes showed the figure or symbolist superhero to be in a state of vulnerability, an emotion that has often crept into her work. Her social commentary pieces, although sutble or humourous on first glance were quite deceiving if the viewer didn't take the time to look beyond the application of materials and the layering of paint, the messages of economic downturn, depression and identity issues hit you between the eyes and such emotions as hope, vulnerability, and survival ran strong.
Zylstra's mixed media drawings on Arches Paper were hung framed in a smaller space on their own that separated the 2 larger spaces of the gallery, so the impact of these 4 strong works was felt on entering this space. Each drawing although similar in palette and layered with such materials as charcoal, oil paint, crushed pebble, shellac and dimensional pen, held your attention individually as the raw emotion pulled you inside the world of the lone figure and the story they ultimately had to tell.
